Quick 2014 Summer Update

I just wanted to post a quick update on our situation. We dropped off “Odyssey,” our Beneteau 361, at the Fernandina Beach City Marina the third week of June. Our Annapolis Yacht broker, Tim Wilbricht of Annapolis Yacht Sales, and crew picked up Odyssey and sailed offshore around Cape Hatteras and then up the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis arriving on 28 June.

It took 5.5 days sailing 24/7 to get Odyssey from Fernandina Beach, FL to Annapolis, MD. Not sure what the distance is so I do not know their average speed. Although Tim told me that in one 24-hour period off North Carolina the wind was 25 to 30 knots off the starboard stern. They were on the western edge of the Gulf Stream and traveled about 10 knots for this stretch. Other than this period, they motor sailed the rest of the time. They had no trouble except, just as they entered the Chesapeake Bay, Odyssey was stopped by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Vessel had agents from, and I am not making this up, ICE, the ATF, the DEA, onboard to search the vessel. I would have been worried that my flares were out of date, but apparently the Coast Guard was not really interested in the stop. They were just providing transport for the other agents. Obviously, the agents found nothing of consequence on board and after an hour delay, Odyssey was allowed to continue. Seems like a real waste of government resources to me.

While Tim and his crew were bringing Odyssey back to Annapolis, Dena and I rented a car in Florida and drove back to Maryland as we had several doctors’ appointments that we could not miss.

We spent the July 4th week sailing on the Chesapeake Bay on Dena’s brother’s boat. Now we are at Rhoboth beach, DE visiting with some old friends and some Bahamas friends that we met in Hopetown.

After visiting some family and other friends around the country during August, we will spend most of September and October traveling in Italy before we return in early November. I will update you on this trip as we get closer. After that, we plan to look for a new sailboat.

For those interested, I have included a few more of our Bahamas summer photos.

Retirement Planning Helpful Hint

I read a good article the other day in the Wall Street Journal personal finance page about how important it is to begin collecting your social security benefits at the right time. Rather than summarize the article here, I am going to just include the link to the article on their website. The article starts out talking about, if you are short on savings, to try to work as long as possible. However, even if this does not apply to your situation, the discussion in the article on the benefit of delaying the start of your social security benefits is a good one. Click or paste the link below to read it.
